Description
Katam by Phitofilos is a pure powder that is obtained from the leaves of the Buxus Dioica tree. The dark green powder results in a nearly black colour result with violet undertones (unlike indigo that has blue undertones). Due to it being a purely natural product, Katam requires a certain amount of time to oxidate. Therefore, the colour result may only be visible on dry hair after a few hours.
Classic application:
- The application/reaction time on brown or dark brown hair corresponds to 40 - 120 minutes.
- Light brown hair, with or without few grey hair, will be given a dark, cool shade.
- Grey hair: it is advised to pretreat grey hair with a basic colouration using Henna Red No. 2 or No. 3 (20 - 45 minutes). Apply the Katam paste immediately after rinsing the henna pretreatment and leave on for 40 - 120 minutes.
Application:
- Depending on the length and thickness of the hair, mix the required amount of powder with hot water or black tea until a creamy paste is formed.
- A pinch of baking soda can also be added to the water being used for mixing.
- Leave the mixture to rest for 1 - 2 hours while stirring occasionally.
- Apply the paste to clean, towel-dried hair.
- Wrap the hair in clingfilm or aluminium foil and leave on for 40 - 120 minutes, depending on your desired colour outcome.
- Thoroughly rinse the hair and dry as usual.

Excellent natural product
Rated with 5 out of 5 stars.
Like another customer, I also had concerns that my third order of katam from Ecco Verde might be indigo, I emailed Phitofilos, and they wrote me back a very patient and detailed email explaining everything from how they cultivate long relationships with their growers and vendors, to the molecular composition of katam and indigo, to their own refining process. It turns out I had just received a batch of katam that was of such excellent, strong quality that I thought it was indigo. It is very difficult to find genuine katam, and the fact that Phitofilos has committed to support and provide a market for the growers of Yemeni henna and katam speaks to their integrity as a company, especially because the war in Yemen makes it especially challenging. As with all natural products, the beauty of using katam and henna is that it puts you in dialogue with the earth, so this was a reminder to me to be more attentive to the seasonal variations in the product. Phitofilos is a good, trustworthy company and I am happy to be able to purchase their products here.

No violet reflections - does it really contain katam?
Rated with 1 out of 5 stars.
Katam is supposed to give violet reflections, but this mixture gave me the typical reflections of a mixture of henna + indigo. I do not think there was any katam in my packet. I have used katam in the past and it made my naturally dark hair look black with some very faint violet reflections (just as pure indigo gives very faint blue reflections). This mixture gave my hair a very dark chocolate colour, which is not what I wanted (though the colour itself is not bad), but what I really hate about it is that it gave me the dreaded coppery reflections from henna (which is NOT supposed to be in this mixture, at all!) which I hate because they clash with my skin tone. I have to say that I am very disappointed, because I trusted this brand and never thought they would sell a henna & indigo mixture as pure katam powder.

Perfect, but...
Rated with 4 out of 5 stars.
I bought katam and crespino to rid my hair of yellow hues that cassia gives it, but neither work perfectly for my hair (crespino did nothing at all). Katam gives it a red-ish yet violet and cool shade. If I am too generous with the katam in my mixture, my hair gets about two tones darker, but it fades gradually.
Once it went a little green, but all in all, I love using it to balance the hue of my hair (sort of).Was this rating helpful? (4) (3)
